Administrative history
The Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission was created in 1987 following the disbanding of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness. Its mandate and existence was formalized by amendments to the Public Service Act in 1988 which outlined its purpose as to "enhance the quality of life of Nova Scotians through the development, encouragement, establishment, co-ordinations, implementation and promotion of sport and recreation programs and services." Although nominally a commission the agency was headed by an Executive Director who reported to an assigned minister and the Commission's staff were public servants. The Commission also co-ordinated the activities of a number of sport and recreation sector organizations some of which were granted various forms of funding by the Commission. The Commission also funded facilities and activities through a variety of programs. The Commission’s activities were folded into the Office of Health Promotion and Protection when it was created in 2002.
Custodial history
Although these materials were received from the Sport and Recreation Commission in 1995 they also reflect materials created by the earlier Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness which had program responsibility for some of the Commission's activities.
Scope and content
Consists of materials created by the Commission to document its activities in the sports and recreation sector in Nova Scotia between 1983 and 1994. During this time the province hosted the 1987 Canada Winter Games at facilities centred in Cape Breton County and the Commission was heavily involved in the games from bids from across the province to host the games, to site selection of the venues once the host had been identified, to details on the management of the games and the achievements of Nova Scotia Athletes. While not the complete record of the games that might have been kept by the Winter Games committee, the records do contain information on the composition of provincial teams and competition results. Also contains minutes of management and grant committee meetings of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Fitness between 1984 and 1989 and additional materials reflecting the participation of the Department or Commission on relevant national committees of allied and like organizations.
