Biographical history
Morris Edward Silver, fisherman, welder and WWI soldier, was born 11 August 1891 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to Nathan Silver (1856-1916) and Emma Louise Berringer (1858-1939) . He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 20 October 1914 and served as a sergeant with the 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion during World War I in Europe. He was wounded in 1917, sent to hospital in England where he recovered and was honourably discharged 19 June 1918. Prior to the Great War he earned a living as a fisherman. After the war, he returned to Lunenburg, became a welder and rented garage space from the Lunenburg Foundry Company. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows lodge at Lunenburg (Masons), the Canadian Legion, and the Liberal Association. He never married but was very close to Dr. Elizabeth L. Hall, also from the area, who chose a career in social services. Morris corresponded with Elizabeth regularly while she was away at college in Reading, PA and later when she lived and worked in Montreal, Quebec during the Second World War. Morris Silver died in Lunenburg, NS on 7 June 1969.
Custodial history
The contents of the fonds were found among the papers of Mr. Silver’s nephew, Professor J. Murray Beck, having been donated to Nova Scotia Archives in August 2010.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of mostly correspondence with Elizabeth “Bessie” Hall while she was in Reading, PA, USA, 1928-1930, and when living and working as a professional in the social services field in Montreal, Quebec 1944-1946. In the letters, Elizabeth comments on her work, war news and mail censorship, a train trip from Vancouver to Montreal in 1941, social activities with Morris and others while on holidays in Nova Scotia, and the growing closeness between herself and Morris. Also included is a small file of financial receipts 1928-1930, a photograph of a uniformed SGT Morris Silver on crutches taken at the Wharncliffe War Hospital in Sheffield, England, a hospital Christmas Dinner menu for 1917, his honourable discharge certificate and a panorama photograph of the military training Camp Aldershot, Kings County, Nova Scotia in 1916.
