Video Theatre Association

Fonds consists of black and white video recordings produced by individuals. Topics include documentaries on unions, unemployment, daycare (especially St. Joseph’s Day Care Centre in Halifax), and environmental concerns including a debate between Elizabeth May and John Dickie on the Spruce Budworm. The Halifax Shipyards, National Sea Products, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) hearings on Pay TV Services, and the Killam Library at Dalhousie University are recorded as well as community events such as NS High School Drama Festival of 1974, the Baddeck Community Planning meeting 1975, and the Festival Acadien in 1978. Videos also include demonstrations of video and sound production techniques, Donald Johnston of Lincolnville NS performing his own music, women’s sexual assault stories, and education practices for hearing and visually impaired children, among others.

Also included in the fonds are shot lists for some productions, the Video Theatre Catalog of video titles in their collection (1974-1976), and a written brief submitted by the Association to the CRTC objecting to the introduction of Pay TV.

Fonds consists of nine ledgers of financial and accounting information. The ledgers include notes written by W.B. Almon's daughter, Nancy Carscallen, in 1992 that identify some of the people and specifics mentioned in the ledgers. There are also a few newspaper clippings relating to the Theatre Arts Guild in Halifax.

Consists of records relating to Wetmore's responsibilities as drama advisor and arts supervisor with the Nova Scotia government from the 1940s-1970s, his role in the various community theatre organizations in Nova Scotia which he helped found, and his participation in theatrical events as a director, dramatist, and administrator, and as an instructor and adjudicator of speech and drama festivals. Includes correspondence, records of various drama and arts groups including minutes of meetings, financial statements, circulars, reports, notes and related materials, and many of Wetmore's own literary works such as scripts for plays, radio broadcasts, book reviews, articles and speeches. A separate section consists of subject files that concern theatre-related materials, activity reports for the Department of Education, and records of the Centennial Commission for which Wetmore acted as local entertainment chair. There are also several scrapbooks and newspaper clippings compiled by Wetmore on drama, theatre and the performing arts in North America, predominantly in Nova Scotia, 1927-1983. A few files contain biographical data, personal correspondence, a diary and family photographs and related documents.

Documents Glad Moffatt’s music career as a vaudeville performer in the early 20th Century and consists of: newspaper clippings of performance reviews and theatre show ads (1914-1930); 2 scrapbooks of news clippings with photographs and correspondence enclosed (1908-1935); a travel diary detailing expenses and earnings on a tour of major cities in the South and Southwest United States (1921-1923) with a tax return for 1922, some photographs and correspondence enclosed; work contracts with B.F. Keith and other management companies (1920-1928); theatre programs and advertising flyers where she performed (1916-1929); personal and business correspondence (1920-1933); publicity photographs and personal snapshots [1910-1929]; song lyrics and notes-to-self [1920s]; and some invoices and receipts (1923-1925).

Consists of drawings, blueprints, graphic and textual records as well as photographs documenting Fred Allen's professional career as a set designer. The contents of the fonds document his work with Parks Canada, Neptune Theatre, Dalhousie University, and Andrew Cochran Entertainment and more specifically his work with the production Theodore Tugboat. There is also a large representative sample of set designs from the television production of Codco.

Carl Bennett

Fonds consists of Carl's letters written to his sister and parents in Halifax while serving overseas between 1916 and 1918. He wrote several times a month and the letters describe Carl's social and military activities in detail, both in France and in England. Included are stories about fellow officers and friends, social and recreational activities such as visits to concerts and the theatre, sports, motor trips, dining out, and card games. There are also descriptions of his war experiences such as learning to fly military aircraft and being exposed to shelling, anti-aircraft guns and bombs. In addition there is a letter to John Bennett (Carl's ancestor), from his brother in Aberdeen, Scotland, dated 19 March 1818. In it Bennett describes his dangerous transatlantic voyage in a small vessel. There is also a letter to Carl from Jessie Bell of London, a cousin, who provides family information and biographical information on Carl and the Bennett family.

Consists of a representative sample of photographic files produced by the Crosby studio as well as selected samples of Crosby's work as a free-lance photographer in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1990s. The bulk of the studio's production consisted of portraits, passport snapshots, wedding photos, advertising copy work, industrial and construction site progress shots, aerial views of urban areas for developers, copy prints of architectural drawings and sketches, theatre and television publicity shots, and photos of notable buildings and street scapes. The files include negatives, copy prints, photographs and transparencies. They depict important contemporary persons and events, such as the famous 1943 Churchill photograph, aerial views of downtown Halifax and Dartmouth in the 1960s when rapid changes in urban development commenced, the early days of CBC Halifax television productions (e.g. Don Messer, Singalong Jubilee), the peak of industrial activity at Halifax Shipyards and Trenton Steel Works, the expanding fishing industry, the construction of the Sedco Oil Rig for Sable Island, 1969-1971, the assembly of Volvo automobiles in its Dartmouth plant, and the reactions of victims' families during the Springhill Mine Disaster of 1958.

Consists of material relating to MacSwain's work as a filmmaker, including release prints of several of his films (Super 8 and 16 mm), as well as roll negs, answer prints, work prints, and video masters. Fifteen of MacSwain's productions are represented, the majority of which are short experimental or documentary films dealing with topics such as homosexuality, the AIDS epidemic, nuclear waste disposal, and war. Also included are soundtracks and narrations, and photographs (negatives, prints, contact sheets, ca. 1890-1992, predominant 1982-1992) of stills used in his films and supporting images, both originals and copies. Fonds also contains supporting textual records, such as scripts, correspondence, story boards, note books, financial documents, promotional materials, and research material, such as photocopied magazine articles and historical documents.

Consists of correspondence, financial statements, receipts, programmes, descriptions of concerts, newspaper clippings, biographical sketches of performing artists, and printed material relating to various Nova Scotia Talent Trust benefits, including the Nova Scotia Summer School Concert, 1959-1975. Also includes a list of award recipients, 1944-1978, and a list of talent trust concerts, art exhibitions, and benefit programs, 1956-1971.

Also consists artists files related to funding applications to the Nova Scotia Talent Trust and associated materials. In submitting funding requests for educational programs or developmental opportunities artists created portfolios related to their artistic achievement that contained materials such as exhibition programs, concert programs, reviews, photographs or sound recordings of their work and other records to demonstrate their cultural achievement, as well as budget documents indicating the costs of programs and sources of other funding in addition to what was being sought from the Trust. Some files contain artistic or academic evaluations of the applicants. The files do indicate the level of support given by the Trust to individual applicants.

Also includes documentation from festivals where he performed, establishment and governance of the Fred Redden Society Society for Traditional Music which was founded after his death, and documents relating to the creation of a tribute recording in his memory.

Also includes photographs of prominent Nova Scotians and homes, and stores, buildings, and special events in Halifax and area, primarily taken by local photographers.

Fonds consists of textual records, graphic material, sound recordings, and moving images created and accumulated by Helen Creighton documenting her private life and professional career as folklorist and author. The fonds includes an extensive collection of folk songs and folk tales which Creighton actively acquired over a sixty year period, and which document the diverse ethnic groups and cultural traditions of Nova Scotia and also New Brunswick. Fonds consists of three series: Photographs depicting Creighton's life and career; Sound recordings and moving images made and accumulated by Creighton; and Correspondence and other material.

Consists of newspaper clippings (1917-2016); photographs (1916-2000s); correspondence (1948-2009); programs, fliers, and memorabilia (1945-2005) all collected by family members. They document the singing and acting careers of Lorne White, his famous sister Portia White and the posthumous recognition given their father Rev. Captain William A. White. The records also document the experiences of Lorne and Mary (Hennigar) White, an inter-racial couple raising a family during the latter half of the 20th century in Nova Scotia.

Also includes an Order of Canada certificate for Lorne’s older brother Bill White (1997), newspaper clippings on the singing career of Yvonne White (sister, 1987-2002), a music CD by Chris White (nephew, 2005), a children’s book about racism by Sheila White (niece, 1993), newspaper clippings on racism in the RCMP collected by Cpl. Calvin G. Lawrence (b.1941-d.1998), a re-print article on anti-black racism by George Elliott Clarke (great nephew, 2012), and a White family genealogy by Bill’s wife Vivian R. (Keeler) White (2002). Also includes a video recording of a fictional scene 2 men and 1 woman socializing and playing a piano in a bar (no audio).

Fonds consists of records documenting Betty Peterson's personal relationships, volunteer activities and interests in peace and social justice issues in Nova Scotia and internationally. The records are organized into four groups, the first consisting of files documenting her activities from 1980-1993, the second her activities from 1994-2004, and the third her activities from 2004-2013, with some overlapping of dates. The fourth group consists of Peterson’s personal correspondence and biographical files 1951-2011. Records in the first 3 groups are arranged by subject, by either the name of an organization (e.g. Voice of Women for Peace), or a cause (e.g. aboriginal rights). The personal correspondence files are arranged by year or by correspondent. Starting in 1977 these files also include annual calendars with brief notes on activities. Fonds includes a large amount of published research and resource material on a given issue (e.g. newspaper clippings, periodicals, and newsletters), but also contains Peterson's notes, memoirs and diaries with comments and recollections, as well as correspondence (incoming and outgoing), memoranda, speeches and articles, minutes of meetings, briefs, reports, published articles about her, transcripts of interviews she gave, and photographs.

Consists mainly of photographs of church services, church members, Willard and Jean Clayton through the years and their family and friends including Jean’s Aunt Viola Desmond and Rev. Dr. William P. Oliver and his wife Pearleen Oliver (1925-2019). Also includes biographical documents on education and employment (1946-2005), newspaper clippings, manuscript and published writings and poetry (1947?-2021); speeches and sermons; correspondence with employers, church members, and family (1946-2019); church service programs for Emmanuel, Beechville and Cornwallis Street (now called New Horizons) Baptist Churches among others (1924-2000); minutes of the Annual Sessions of The African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia (1869, 1913-1987); and audio and video recordings of special events in the lives of Willard and Jean Clayton including their wedding (audio), Jean’s graduation ceremony from Christopher Course, and Willard’s funeral (1954-2007). The fonds also includes a small collection of books on the history of black people in North America (published 1895-2006). Organized by activity in roughly chronological order, these records document the lives of these African Nova Scotians before, during, and after the Black Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and the beginning of the Black Lives Matter Movement of the 2010s.
