Edith Girouard

Consists of scrapbooks about the Ajax Club, North End Services Canteen, and the Women's Voluntary Services Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, likely compiled by Edith Girouard. The scrapbooks contain photographs and newspaper clippings about the work of these wartime organizations. Fonds also includes an annual report of the Ajax Club, and a booklet entitled The Case of the Ajax Club.

Consists of Fisheries Minister's correspondence files with the Premier, other provincial and federal ministers, the Fishermen’s Loan Board, department staff and the public as well as planning and budget files (1960-1973); Deputy Minister's correspondence files (1942-1993); the Director of Fisheries Division files when it was part of the Department of Trade and Industry (1943-1964); “Deputy Minister’s Library” containing minutes of the Federal-Provincial Atlantic Fisheries Committee and its Sections (1959-1975); Director of Industrial Development Division files managing projects to improve vessels, gear and harbour facilities as well as negotiating funding agreements with the federal government (1961-1991); Product Development Officers’ files containing scientific research reports and experiments’ results, correspondence, proposals, and photographs (1973-1992); and Funding Programs Case Files from several cost-shared funding programs run by the Department alone or in partnership with the federal government (1972-1998). Fonds also includes meeting minutes, agendas, and loan agreements with the NS Resources Development Board (1980-1986), previously known as the NS Fishermen’s Loan Board.

Some major subjects represented in the records include experimenting with fish waste to make fertilizer (silage) for agricultural use; bringing new products to market such as snails and shark; and improving fish preservation, among other subjects. Some major projects of the Department include building the Fraser Mills hatchery and research centre near Antigonish NS (1987-1990), the Billfish experimental fishery (1995-1996), and the construction of 3 steel-hulled fishing vessels (1977-1979).

Consists of records created during the Royal Commission on Provincial Development and Rehabilitation between 1943 and 1944. Several types of records are included, such as research notes, submissions, reports, and correspondence.

Research notes and reference materials are organized by subject and include newspaper clippings, bibliographies, minutes of special committees, memos, briefs, summaries of research, and similar documents.

Submissions and Reports consist of briefs, correspondence and questionnaire responses submitted by community representatives from across the province on their plans for post-war capital projects and how they might benefit from post-war funding.

Commission Correspondence consists of the incoming and outgoing correspondence of R. M. Dawson and other contributors through the course of the Royal Commission. Letters address follow-up questions to information presented in community hearings, general questions posed to subject experts, and administrative matters.

Records identified as personal correspondence include copies of outgoing letters of a personal nature sent by Dawson, as well as Norman Ward, about property, employment, educational opportunities, publications, and administrative matters.

Miscellaneous Papers include requisition forms, invoices, and other items documenting costs incurred through the course of the Royal Commission. Also included is a map of the Atlantic Coast of Canada showing inshore and deep sea fisheries, with distances from principal fishing ports to banks and transportation lines.

Fonds consists of 2 scrapbooks and file folders containing newspaper clippings (1943-2014); photographs (1917, 1953-2007); correspondence (1945-2014): essays on the founder Walter Callow (1958-2012); founding documents of incorporation and bus design registration (1947, 1953); fundraising event programs, promotions and brochures (1946-2013); some annual reports and annual general meeting minutes, (1953, 1960-1961, 1966-1967); donor lists (1999, 2007); directors lists (2002, 2014); a sign stencil “Callow Coaches”; and vehicle registrations for the first and third bus put on the road (1954).

Records were assembled into 2 scrapbooks by Walter Callow’s daughter Melba and given to the organization: one for photographs and documents, the second for newspaper clippings, which included some French newspapers. The organization continued adding to the photographs scrapbook and used its contents for advertising and fundraising.

Photographs include the first bus, the first Board of Directors, the first civilian and veteran riders, the hostess/nurses, drivers and secretaries, visiting dignitaries and officials, and Walter Callow in his hospital bed at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital. Later images include a 1979 celebration, and the 60th anniversary gathering in 2007.

This material documents the development of specialized transportation for people with disabilities.

Four telegrams to Mrs. Bertha Avery of 89 Edinburgh Street, Halifax from the Minister of National Defence informing her that Lance Sergeant Fred William Avery was wounded in action while fighting overseas with the Canadian Army in the Second World War, in November 1944 and again in March 1945. The wound was minor and the last telegram is direct from Fred Avery announcing his safe arrival in Halifax in June 1945.

Consists of 13 black & white + 12 colour film reels (all 16mm) ranging in length from 15 minutes to 1 hour playing time. Material includes video from American football games played by the Shearwater Flyers and other military teams as well as university and high school teams in the 1950's; several professionally produced films related to sports; and sporting events featuring disabled athletes. There are also local amateur films featuring various sports. Sports represented include archery, sailing, gymnastics and girls ringette, among others. Competitions captured on film include the Pan-American Wheelchair Games, the 1972 and 1976 Olympics for the Physically Disabled, the International Stoke-Mandeville Games which were the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, the 4th Commonwealth Paraplegic Games, and the 1967 Paraplegic Games held in Winnipeg, MB.

Fonds consists of records documenting Betty Peterson's personal relationships, volunteer activities and interests in peace and social justice issues in Nova Scotia and internationally. The records are organized into four groups, the first consisting of files documenting her activities from 1980-1993, the second her activities from 1994-2004, and the third her activities from 2004-2013, with some overlapping of dates. The fourth group consists of Peterson’s personal correspondence and biographical files 1951-2011. Records in the first 3 groups are arranged by subject, by either the name of an organization (e.g. Voice of Women for Peace), or a cause (e.g. aboriginal rights). The personal correspondence files are arranged by year or by correspondent. Starting in 1977 these files also include annual calendars with brief notes on activities. Fonds includes a large amount of published research and resource material on a given issue (e.g. newspaper clippings, periodicals, and newsletters), but also contains Peterson's notes, memoirs and diaries with comments and recollections, as well as correspondence (incoming and outgoing), memoranda, speeches and articles, minutes of meetings, briefs, reports, published articles about her, transcripts of interviews she gave, and photographs.

Consists of 143 music record albums (LPs, 78s and one 45) of Nova Scotia-born international country music star Hank Snow, including albums released in Japan, East Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom; a Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast of Hank Snow; and recordings sold only to radio stations by Thesaurus Programming Service. The Collection spans Hank Snow’s United States recording career starting in the early 1950s up to 1985 when he stopped recording. The collection was assembled by life-long fan Gordon “Gordie” Silver, who bought his first Hank Snow album in 1955 at the age of 10 and continued collecting until 2018.

Gordie’s collection also includes Hank Snow’s E-Z Method for Spanish Guitar complete with instruction booklet; a booklet listing all of Snow’s recordings with Bluebird and with RCA Victor Records up to 1968; a 1984 yearbook from the Hank Snow International Fan Club and a published songbook “Hank’s Favourite Songs” (cover is missing).
