Paving Projects albums

Series forms part of Department of Highways and Public Works fonds and consists of three presentation albums containing photographs documenting the paving of sections of the Trunk highway system across the Province, and technical drawings of paving plants. The photographs predominantly show completed sections of Trunk highways, but there are also photographs showing the reconstruction process, laying drainage pipes, grading and paving, and photographs showing machinery, equipment, paving plants, pavement, and unidentified men working. Photographs also show automobiles, streetscapes, landscapes, residences, farms, businesses, bridges and other landmarks.

Albums are inscribed with the name of the R.W. McColough who was Chief Engineer (1924-1939) for the Department of Highways, then Deputy Minister (1939-1943) of Department of Highways and Public Works.

Jotham Blanchard McCully fonds

Fonds consists of several letters and other items accumulated by Jotham McCully as secretary of the Oak Island Association during its attempts to locate treasure on Oak Island from 1862 to 1863. The letters are all written to McCully from engineers and officials at the money pit site, describing problems encountered during the drilling, and also from several shareholders describing potential financial problems. Fonds also includes documents concerning an Oak Island Association meeting in Truro in 1864, and plans and a report from engineers on how to stop the flooding of water in the money pit in 1867.

Fonds consists of photographs of Guysborough and vicinity and Buckley family and friends, predominantly by William Buckley and his children, Mary, Edith and Walter. Their photographs of Guysborough and vicinity, taken for both personal and commercial purposes, document the growth and development of Guysborough over fifty years. They depict commercial and residential buildings, streets, harbour, general views, shipping, school activities, community events, fires, outdoor hockey and curling, yachting regattas at Guysborough and Canso, building and bridge construction, farms and livestock, mills, Guysborough Railway survey, 193rd Regiment leaving Guysborough, 1916 and visit of Governor-General Byng, 1923. Also includes negatives left by others for printing, such as school field day, 1932, by Mrs. Erdine Harris and Larry's River and Charlos Cove by Rev. A.H. Cormier. Buckley family photographs included informal portraits of them and their friends and reflect their interests, particularly boating, building working model boats, gardening, and other outdoor activities such as sledding and skating.

Royal Engineers fonds

Fonds consists of records created by the Royal Engineers stationed at Halifax, documenting military construction operations. Includes maps and architectural plans including a few from the 1760s-1790s, as well as copied items dating from 1740s-50s, primarily illustrating military property and fortifications at Halifax and New Brunswick, and also permanent and temporary structures such as storehouses, bridges, martello towers, and the Melville Island prison. Also includes letterbooks, 1761-1858, which contain incoming and outgoing letters to and from engineer officers in Halifax and outposts as well as the inspector general of fortifications in Britain, some of which also include general orders, lists of building materials, specifications, and estimates; four letter books with accompanying reports, estimates, and sketches pertaining to the Halifax Citadel, 1825-1847; reports of defences, 1759, 1810-1817, 1834; and deeds and warrants relating to military lands, 1778-1858. Fonds also contains glass plate negatives taken by engineer officers, 1870-1884, depicting various military and naval buildings and property in and around Halifax, at sites including the dockyard, Citadel, Point Pleasant, Fort Massey cemetery, Fort Ogilvie, Fort Charlotte at Georges Island, Fort Clarence, Fort Sackville, York Redoubt, and Ives Point at McNabs Island. Also includes a few photographs of officers with horse-drawn sleighs and demolition of the ruins of the Halifax Poor Asylum fire.

Fonds consists of a scrapbook compiled by Sydenham Howe, mostly documenting his family and his literary and artistic interests. Includes correspondence, predominantly written to and from Hon. Joseph Howe; printed and handwritten poems by Joseph Howe, Maria Morris, Mary Jane Katzman Lawson, and others; prints of engravings and lithographs, many of which depict women's fashions of the mid-19th century; newspaper clippings, several pertaining to poetry and curling; sketches and watercolours by artist Maria Morris as well as Mary Currie and S.J. Howe; visiting cards; autographs dated 1757 onwards; printed material and ephemera, including invitations, the Victoria School of Art and Design exhibibition of loans catalogue, 1887, and 1889 issue of Halifax Carnival, and three Notman photographs of John Howe and John and Mary (Currie) Ross. Fonds contains correspondence with friends and colleagues including Evelyn Garbary, Margaret Bickley, Hans Weber, Claude Bissell, and various family members; published and unpublished short stories and poems by Buckler and other writers; newspaper clippings, chiefly relating to his book reviews; daily journals; notes; post cards; greeting cards; school certificates and notebooks; financial statements; newsletters and other publications; photographs of Buckler, family members and events; sound recordings of interviews, plays, and stories.

Edward A. Bollinger fonds

Fonds consists of negatives taken by Bollinger for his clients while operating The Camera Shop and later Camera Shop of the Maritimes. Subjects include exterior and interior views of businesses in Halifax such as Imperial Oil and Royal Bank and its employees, Victoria General Hospital staff and facilities, societies, churches, hotels, storefronts, Halifax shipyards, naval personnel and events, CHNS radio station events, and wartime housing. Also contains scenes of rural Nova Scotia including the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Cape Breton. There are also a small number of personal photographs of Bollinger's family including son Wynn, friends, and social events. The fonds also contains film footage taken by Bollinger while visiting Nova Scotia in the summer of 1934. Images include Halifax Public Gardens and a trip to Isle Haute, Peggy's Cove, "Evangeline" area, re-enactment of Champlain's landing at Port Royal, and the Nova Scotia Guides Meets held at Lake William.

Ethel Jane Bond and Murray Kellough fonds

Fonds consists of a pass for access for the devastated area issued by the City of Halifax and a sixteen page hand-written letter by Ethel Jean Bond to her uncle, Murray Kellough, of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In her letter she describes the devastation of the Halifax Explosion, the death of her father, and the injuries that her sister Bertha sustained, and discusses the impact on various neighbours in the vicinity of Kaye Street in Halifax, including the Swetnams, Killams, and Theakstons, among others.

Sally Ross Acadian Cemeteries Research Collection

Collection was created during 8 field trips and consists of black and white photographic negatives and contact sheets of 60 post-Deportation (after 1764) Acadian cemeteries, supplemented with colour prints of the oldest surviving cemetery at St. Pierre Catholic Church in Chéticamp on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and a typed inventory describing each negative. This is not a comprehensive collection of all Acadian grave markers. Rather, the photographs represent a sampling of grave stones and monuments dating from 1817 (earliest found) to 2002, selected by Dr. Ross for their physical characteristics, French language inscriptions and historical significance. Examples in wood, stone, concrete and metal are depicted, as well as representative family names and at least one World War I or World War II veterans’ grave marker from each parish community. The layout and geographical site of each cemetery is also captured. Dr. Ross organized the photographs by community and within each community, by church cemetery. She also created a written inventory describing each photograph including the French inscription with English translations, a provincial map showing cemetery locations and a final report to the funder outlining her cultural analysis. The photographs were taken by Deborah Trask. This Collection shows the influence of French culture, and in particular the longevity of the French language, in Nova Scotia’s Acadian-founded communities through an examination of cemeteries as cultural artifacts over time.

Item is a handwritten and illustrated memoir by Simone Stehelin, describing her experiences of travelling from France to Nova Scotia in 1895 at the age of ten and settling in her new home in the woods outside Weymouth where she lived with her parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters until 1910. The memoir is in French and includes 2 printed and hand-coloured maps of the area as well as 35 pen and ink drawings, some in colour. The memoir was written in 1962 in Paris, France.

Fonds consists of textual records, graphic material, sound recordings, and moving images created and accumulated by Helen Creighton documenting her private life and professional career as folklorist and author. The fonds includes an extensive collection of folk songs and folk tales which Creighton actively acquired over a sixty year period, and which document the diverse ethnic groups and cultural traditions of Nova Scotia and also New Brunswick. Fonds consists of three series: Photographs depicting Creighton's life and career; Sound recordings and moving images made and accumulated by Creighton; and Correspondence and other material.

Public Works and Services

Series forms part of Treasury Papers and consists of records outlining the interests and responsibilities of the Public Works and Services Board of the Provincial Government. It has been further broken up into several subject categories, as follows:
• Public Buildings principally concerns Province House, House of Assembly and Government House, but also Market House, Parsonage House, the Governor’s farm and the Lord Bishop’s Estate. Records regard repairs to the buildings, lists of supplies, rents and assorted bills. These records also include accounts and lists regarding carpenters, masons and other labourers, as well as suppliers from the community.
• Records regarding Education primarily consist of Provincial government warrants for services, such as teaching, repairs, and supplies, as well as records of funds for the establishment of public schools and various educational institutions across the province. Institutions documented include, but are not limited to, the Academy at Windsor, Grammar School in Halifax, College at Windsor, Kings College, Acadian School, Dalhousie College, Academy at Pictou, School for Orphans and Poor Children, National School, Halifax Catholic School and Horton Academy.
• The Provincial Government, through the Board of Works and The Commissioners for the Settling of Isle Sable, took great interest in Sable Island and in safeguarding its potential trade and investment. These records include accounts of voyages to and from the Island, shipwrecks on its shore, the lighthouses, settlement and settlers, and descriptions of the Island and its ecology. Records demonstrate several ways the Government generated revenue from the Island, including the salvage of shipwrecks (appeals from shipwrecked crews are also included), and the sale of such products as oil, skins, cranberries and horses. Records include accounts of settlers and officials on Sable Island (Edward and William Hodgson), agreements between the Commissioners and ships’ captains or Masters (Joseph Darby, William Cook), receipts and lists of supplies and services, wages for labourers, and funds set aside for the support of the settlement.
• The expenses of the Halifax Poor House and Poor Relief in general fell under the banner of Public Works for a period between the 1760s and 1860s. These records focus on government expenditures in support on the Poor House in Halifax, but also contain some records (mostly warrants) for the support of the transient poor and the Orphan House. Communications from the Master of the Poor House at Halifax (John Woodin) and the accounts of the Overseers of the Poor for things such as burials, coffins, and clothing are also included. Many of these records include lists of residents maintained and supported in the Poor House, often mentioning any ailments and other details. The Master and Keeper of the Poor House (Jeremiah Marshman) provided monthly memorials and accounts, which are included, as well as his financial transactions with the Treasury and the Overseers of the Poor.
• Workhouse and Jail records mostly regard construction and repairs to the buildings, as well as payments to the Sheriff and to the Keeper of the Workhouse and the Halifax Bridewell.
• Board of Works general expenditures and accounts include receipts from the Receiver-General and Quarterly Accounts Current.
• Records of Revenue Boats mostly consist of expenses for supplies and maintenance, principally of the schooner ‘Hunter’ (Charles L. Leonard, Commander), which was ‘employed to prevent illicit trade in the Bay of Fundy and elsewhere.’ These revenue boats were used in the service of the Superintendent of Trade and Fisheries (George Leonard) for the prevention of smuggling, though occasionally these ships were sent on missions to supply the Navy. Records also regard the payment of employees, the suitability, qualities and maintenance of the ‘Hunter’, the schooners ‘Union’ and ‘Vaughn,’ embargos and trade with the United States, and the Halifax Steam Boat Company.
• Electric Telegraph Company records detail posts and lines, with tenders and applications for their supply. Also included are some communications between the Commissioners of the Nova Scotia Electric Telegraph and the Associated Press.

Also included with the Public Works records are accounts for the Hospital for the Insane, including lists of patients being maintained by the Province and as accounts of supplies and services provided, as well as information on labourers employed in the construction of New Market House and accounts and receipts of the Commissioners of Public Markets

Albert Pearl and Mather Byles Pearl fonds

Fonds consists of five diaries kept by the Pearls in their capacity as lighthouse keepers for the Department of Marine, Canada - Lighthouse Service. The contents of the fonds record times when the lights were lit, extinguished and the total time in operation for the lighthouse on Green Island (subsequently Pearl Island), Nova Scotia, at the mouth of St. Margarets Bay. The diaries also include observations about the weather and winds.

Also includes naval ships and personnel, and buildings, streets and views of Halifax, as well as other Nova Scotian communities, including Antigonish, Canso, Dartmouth, Grand Pré, Musquodoboit Harbour, Sheet Harbour, Truro and Whitehead. Predominantly proof prints; also includes glass negatives, both wet- and dry-plate. Photographs organized by format, and within each format by original negative/proof print number.
