Research material includes an overview of the Canadian uranium industry, Canadian policies on nuclear energy, the health risks of radiation, the moral/ethical concerns, nuclear waste management (tailings), and regulation trends in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Consists of portions of the Colonial Office records containing information about Nova Scotia through the British colonial period. The collection includes the original correspondence or dispatches (in-letters) of the various colonial governors of Nova Scotia or other senior officials responsible for administering the colonial government, as well as entry books (out-letters) consisting of copies of Colonial Office replies. These are supplemented with various indexes, registers, acts passed by the colonial legislature, Blue Books of Statistics, sessional papers and miscellanea.

Consists of Fisheries Minister's correspondence files with the Premier, other provincial and federal ministers, the Fishermen’s Loan Board, department staff and the public as well as planning and budget files (1960-1973); Deputy Minister's correspondence files (1942-1993); the Director of Fisheries Division files when it was part of the Department of Trade and Industry (1943-1964); “Deputy Minister’s Library” containing minutes of the Federal-Provincial Atlantic Fisheries Committee and its Sections (1959-1975); Director of Industrial Development Division files managing projects to improve vessels, gear and harbour facilities as well as negotiating funding agreements with the federal government (1961-1991); Product Development Officers’ files containing scientific research reports and experiments’ results, correspondence, proposals, and photographs (1973-1992); and Funding Programs Case Files from several cost-shared funding programs run by the Department alone or in partnership with the federal government (1972-1998). Fonds also includes meeting minutes, agendas, and loan agreements with the NS Resources Development Board (1980-1986), previously known as the NS Fishermen’s Loan Board.

Some major subjects represented in the records include experimenting with fish waste to make fertilizer (silage) for agricultural use; bringing new products to market such as snails and shark; and improving fish preservation, among other subjects. Some major projects of the Department include building the Fraser Mills hatchery and research centre near Antigonish NS (1987-1990), the Billfish experimental fishery (1995-1996), and the construction of 3 steel-hulled fishing vessels (1977-1979).

Consists of photographs taken by Notman Studio of Halifax, Nova Scotia and consists mainly of individual and group portraits of residents of, and visitors to, Halifax. Also includes naval ships and personnel, and buildings, streets and views of Halifax, as well as other Nova Scotian communities, including Antigonish, Canso, Dartmouth, Grand Pré, Musquodoboit Harbour, Sheet Harbour, Truro and Whitehead. Predominantly proof prints; also includes glass negatives, both wet- and dry-plate. Photographs organized by format, and within each format by original negative/proof print number.

Consists of textual records and sound recordings pertaining to Kuusisto's various research projects for the Nova Scotia Museum, federal and provincial governments and other agencies, 1971-1981. The textual records include research notes, correspondence, manuscript drafts and reports arranged by research topic. The topics consist of the history of gold mining and technology in Sherbrooke, an historical inventory of the Eastern Shore Seaside Park System, life patterns of Tancook Families, the history of the Wm. Robertson & Son Hardware building in Halifax, a report on the Mabou Highlands, women and the Nova Scotia economy, midwifery, and day care. The sound recordings are oral history interviews that were part of the above research projects, as well as projects never completed on the socio-economy of Clam Harbour and Ship Harbour.

Fonds consists of records documenting Betty Peterson's personal relationships, volunteer activities and interests in peace and social justice issues in Nova Scotia and internationally. The records are organized into four groups, the first consisting of files documenting her activities from 1980-1993, the second her activities from 1994-2004, and the third her activities from 2004-2013, with some overlapping of dates. The fourth group consists of Peterson’s personal correspondence and biographical files 1951-2011. Records in the first 3 groups are arranged by subject, by either the name of an organization (e.g. Voice of Women for Peace), or a cause (e.g. aboriginal rights). The personal correspondence files are arranged by year or by correspondent. Starting in 1977 these files also include annual calendars with brief notes on activities. Fonds includes a large amount of published research and resource material on a given issue (e.g. newspaper clippings, periodicals, and newsletters), but also contains Peterson's notes, memoirs and diaries with comments and recollections, as well as correspondence (incoming and outgoing), memoranda, speeches and articles, minutes of meetings, briefs, reports, published articles about her, transcripts of interviews she gave, and photographs.

Consists of records created and/or accumulated by the Gay and Lesbian Association of Nova Scotia (GALA) and its predecessor, the Gay Association for Equality (GAE). Includes minutes of annual, board, general and executive meetings; correspondence of the secretary and program director; yearly financial statements; Turret/Rumours management files; Pride Week Committee files; subject files; and in-house publications such as newsletters and brochures. The minutes files also contain supporting documentation such as correspondence, notes, committee reports, officers' reports, and similar materials. The Rumours Management Board and Pride Week Committee files contain illustrative posters, snapshots and photographs depicting activities and events. Files are arranged chronologically except for subject files, which are arranged alphabetically.

Miller family

Consists of records documenting five generations of the Miller family of Halifax and Lunenburg County and related families. The bulk contains correspondence, accounts, and bills relating to the business affairs of Jacob Miller, his son Garret, and his grandsons Garret, Jacob, and Joseph. The records also document the public offices held by the Miller men including their involvement in the Lunenburg County Court of General Sessions and militia and local church. Also contains family letters, deeds, indentures, briefs and other legal records, memo books, journals, scrapbooks and ephemera relating to various members of the Miller family and several generations of related families including Pernette, Allan, Aitkens, Hall, Godard, Mack, Owen, Erad, and Zouberbuhler. Journals kept by William D. Hall describe gold prospecting and mining activities and include mention of the Central Gold Mining Co. Also included are maps of Nova Scotia counties, Bridgewater and the Miller estate property, and Pernette property in Petite Riviere.

Consists of correspondence and other records created and received by Young, relating to agricultural, business, and political affairs. The majority of letters are written to Young from acquaintances including Lord Dalhousie, Sir James Kempt, Rear Admiral W. Griffith, and officials from local agricultural societies concerning agricultural matters. Other letters relate to the Free Press controversy over Young's agricultural theories and his ensuing dispute with James Cuppaidge Cochran, James William Johnson, and others, as well as political matters including elections and condition of roads. Also contains copies of the Agricola letters, personal correspondence between Young, his wife Nancy and son William discussing business affairs, family news, and events including the war with Britain. Also contains a few letters to John and Nancy Young from the Rennys in Scotland concerning personal and family news. Other records in the fonds include notes, agricultural society special meeting minutes, and ephemera.

Michael Tobin. Letters between Young and his father and brothers George and Charles concern personal news and family business matters. Other records in the fonds include Young's summaries of cases heard before him in the Supreme Court, Court of Vice Admiralty, and the Court of Marriage and Divorce, ledgers, day books, financial statements and accounts, drafts of speeches, newspaper clippings, law books, personal diary, and journal of a trip to England. Subjects include the 1917 election, Military Services Act, Farmers' Creditors Arrangement Act, proportional representation, federal budget and other financial matters. Fonds also contains photographic portraits of Rhodes as well as photographs of the speaker's chair and interior views of the House of Commons, blueprints of the Amherst subway, and a print of Acadia University.

Consists of a representative sample of photographic files produced by the Crosby studio as well as selected samples of Crosby's work as a free-lance photographer in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1990s. The bulk of the studio's production consisted of portraits, passport snapshots, wedding photos, advertising copy work, industrial and construction site progress shots, aerial views of urban areas for developers, copy prints of architectural drawings and sketches, theatre and television publicity shots, and photos of notable buildings and street scapes. The files include negatives, copy prints, photographs and transparencies. They depict important contemporary persons and events, such as the famous 1943 Churchill photograph, aerial views of downtown Halifax and Dartmouth in the 1960s when rapid changes in urban development commenced, the early days of CBC Halifax television productions (e.g. Don Messer, Singalong Jubilee), the peak of industrial activity at Halifax Shipyards and Trenton Steel Works, the expanding fishing industry, the construction of the Sedco Oil Rig for Sable Island, 1969-1971, the assembly of Volvo automobiles in its Dartmouth plant, and the reactions of victims' families during the Springhill Mine Disaster of 1958.

Also includes newspaper clippings, articles, certificates, biographical notes, addresses, correspondence, and printed ephemera relating to Alfred C. Fuller and his career; draft manuscript and correspondence pertaining to his biography, A Foot in the Door; and notes and charts on Fuller family geneaology and related families. Fonds also contains photographs of the Fuller Brush Company plant and products, Alfred C. Fuller, family members, celebrities, and social and promotional events, some of which were published in Foot in the Door. There are also drawings of Fuller, miscellaneous prints, and sound recordings and films featuring interviews with Fuller, company training and recruitment, and scenes of a trip to Connecticut by the Nova Scotia Apple Blossom Festival queen in 1960.
