Reginald Richardson fonds
Accession 2003-052/001 · Fonds · 1868-1965, predominantly 1933-1949

Fonds consists of correspondence from friends, family, military associates, and public figures. Aside from one unique letter dated 15 February 1868, in which the cost and means of sending bridge materials by ship from England to Windsor are discussed, the majority of the letters are from the 1930s and 1940s. Of special interest are the 1940s letters, which include several written during World War II. While stationed in Europe Richardson frequently wrote to his parents; while he did not see live action at the front, he described social and economic conditions in the recently-liberated Netherlands and Belgium in 1944, as well as the sound of "buzz" bombs, the mood of the people, and his recreational and social activities. Some letters are from military colleagues such as a British army officer stationed in Basra, Iraq, who related in 1941 that the war situation in that area was "all about oil..." Most of the 1930s correspondence is from various public figures of the day such as royalty, peerage, admirals, politicians, authors, frontiersmen, business people and many others, of whom Richardson requested an autograph and photo. Some of these figures responded and a few even initiated a long-term correspondence with Richardson.
