Fonds consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence documenting the business operations of A. Belcher & Co. and of Andrew Belcher’s activities as agent for the General Mining Association (GMA). The incoming correspondence are 41 letters (1825-1832, 1865) addressed to either Belcher or Almon which document shipments of coal, flour, cheese, gunpowder, fish and lumber; itemize contracts undertaken; and give details about other business dealings including mortgages, construction projects and outstanding debts. It also includes one letter written to Almon a number of years after the business had ceased operation.
The outgoing correspondence is a copy letter book attributed to A. Belcher & Co., 520 pages with a name index, covering 11 Sep 1830 to 16 Sep 1833. There are lengthy letters to supervisors of the coal mines in Sydney, Albion Mines (Stellarton), Bridgeport and Pictou, NS, as well as letters to Richard Smith, visiting GMA engineer; G.P. Duval the GMA contact in London; the London office of A. Belcher & Co.; and business contacts in New York, Jamaica, Bermuda, Boston, Newfoundland and Quebec. The contents document shipments of food stuffs and supplies, especially coal and the parts needed for the newly invented steam engine being installed in the coal mines by Richard Smith of London. One personal correspondent is with William Archer, a former enslaved man living in Bermuda, writing Belcher for help to free his mother. Belcher also comments on the postal service, an independent Cape Breton, and growing competition from the United States and Samuel Cunard.

Records include the Minister’s and CEO’s incoming and outgoing correspondence (2003-2010); Minister’s and CEO’s speeches to community groups, conferences, and those of the Minister to the Legislature (2003-2010); annual accountability reports and business plans (2005-2011); and briefing notes to the Minister (Barry Barnett, Percy Paris), to Executive Council and to the Premier (Darryl Dexter) as well as other departments in government such as Justice, Health and Education (2004-2012).

Some subjects covered in the files include Africville memorial museum, Lincolnville community protests regarding the landfill site (dump) for Guysborough County, and addressing anti-black racism.

Correspondence includes letters from friends, including artist Olga Douglas, Father Joseph Murray Abraham and friends at the St. Alphonsus mission school in India, and a few letters written by Meagher to other artists. Other records include postcards, poems, art exhibit notices and catalogues, newspaper clippings and other published material, diary, and ephemera. Fonds also contains photographs and postcards used in the production of Meagher's artwork, and her working drawings, drawings, and sketchbooks featuring Nova Scotian coastal villages, fishing scenes, ships, town and country landscapes, Halifax, trees, flora, and scenes of Europe, particularly Ireland and Irish crosses. Collection contains wedding, school and family photographs (1910?-2011); restaurant menus and similar ephemeral documents (ca.1940s-ca.1950s); audio recordings of interviews with Dow Fong, Chuck Lee, Annett Ling, George Ling, William Ling, Dr. Larry Shyu and Dr. William Wong (1988, 2011-2012); memoir on childhood in China, business licenses and card from Chuck Lee (1980s, ca.1920s, 1946) as well as his engineering diploma from Dalhousie University (1939). Also includes a memoir of life at a Halifax Chinese laundry by Linda Lee Oland (1997); historical essays written by Albert Lee (1999-2014) and promotional items for the Nova Scotia Museum exhibit “Growing Up Chinese in Halifax” (1997).

The collection was assembled by Albert Lee for this 1997 museum exhibit. 40 items, including 4 audio interview recordings, were subsequently digitized for use by University of British Columbia Library for their digital exhibit “Early Chinese History in the Maritimes” in 2011-2012. Items are arranged by family creator/owner, with those items used in the digital exhibit filed separately.

Fonds consists of five diaries kept by the Pearls in their capacity as lighthouse keepers for the Department of Marine, Canada - Lighthouse Service. The contents of the fonds record times when the lights were lit, extinguished and the total time in operation for the lighthouse on Green Island (subsequently Pearl Island), Nova Scotia, at the mouth of St. Margarets Bay. The diaries also include observations about the weather and winds.

Fonds consists of one album of photos compiled by R.W. Cautley, in December 1934, as part of a Report to the Commissioner of National Parks for Proposed National Parks in Nova Scotia. Cautley's inspection of proposed sites for national parks was an influential factor in the creation of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in 1936.
Photographs depict landscapes of various locations in Nova Scotia, including Yarmouth, Weymouth, Carleton River, and aerial photographs of Scot Bay, Cape Split, and Cape Blomidon. Also includes photographs of the landscapes along the former No. 4 Highway to Cape Breton Island, NS, the Bras d'Or Lakes, Louisbourg, Whycocomagh, Cheticamp River, and the Margaree River.
Also depicted are various landscapes along the Cabot Trail such as Mackenzie Valley, Pleasant Bay Intervale, Red River, Aspy River, Cape North, Dingwall Harbour, Ingonish, and Indian Brook. The album also includes portraits of H. F. Laurence, Department of Highways Engineer; J. Barrington, M.L.A.; and Richard W. Cautley, Dominion Land Surveyor, and one picture of a proposed bridge location over the Cheticamp River.

Fonds consists of photographs (negatives, contact prints, selected enlargements, and slides) created and accumulated in the course of the Stirling County Study directed by Leighton. The fonds consists primarily of prints and negatives taken by chief photographer John Collier Jr. which depict Digby County, Nova Scotia, including the communities of Digby, Bear River, Cape St. Marys, Freeport, Westport, Weymouth, and numerous others. Includes images of traditional industries (agriculture, fishing, logging, and family businesses), family, social, and religious events, schools, churches, housing, residents, and general views and landscapes. Other photographs include aerial views of the study site taken by the Royal Canadian Air Force; scenes of Digby County from various sources; the Navajo community at Fruitland, New Mexico, USA, relating to a parallel study at Cornell University; and a small number of photographs accumulated by Leighton during his travels to Europe and Africa. Fonds also includes 16mm film reels containing mostly raw footage and work prints relating to the study in Digby and parallel studies in Nigeria and New York, as well as two documentary films shot by Leighton; one film entitled "Porpoise Oil" was produced in collaboration with the Mi'kmaq of the Bear River Reserve in 1936 and features a re-enactment of traditional hunting methods.

Fonds consists of a bound diary in two sections. The first section was writen from 7 January 1778 to September 1779 while Houston was in New York. It recounts details of the weather, arrivals and departures of ships, troop movements, and various battles of the American rebels and their French allies against the British during the Revolutionary War. The second section of the diary was written in Shelburne, Nova Scotia and covers the period from 18 March to 30 May 1788. It details the weather, crop plantings and failures, ice conditions, hauling seaweed, dealing with the black flies, work around the house and other daily events. It is not certain that both portions of the diary were written by Alexander Houston because of differences in the handwriting.

Also includes correspondence from Joseph Howe to Alexander McDougall Jr., along with several pages of notes written by Howe about McDougall's life and poetry for a posthumous publication of his poetry. The fonds also includes several volumes of poetry collected and written by McDougall, a newspaper clipping from the Mechanic & Farmer relating to a poetry lecture given by McDougall at the Antigonish Mechanic's Institute, and a copy of "Funeral Oration on the death of Hon. Daniel Webster" inscribed to Joseph Howe from Amasa McCoy. Also included in the fonds is the marriage certificate of McDougall to Elizabeth Van Buskirk.

Images include the Wellington Barracks and other buildings at Wellington (became CFB Stadacona military base) on Gottingen Street, the ship “Imo” beached on Dartmouth shore, the steamship “S.S. Old Colony” which became a temporary hospital, railway line along the shore, the deep-water military terminals at Pier 2, the market at Duke and Brunswick Streets (became Scotia Square), and the garrison chapel at corner of Brunswick and Cogswell Streets. Photographs bear sequential numbers A1 toA6, B1 to B6… to E1 to E6. Missing from the set is B3.

Fonds also contains photographs of the Fuller Brush Company plant and products, Alfred C. Fuller, family members, celebrities, and social and promotional events, some of which were published in Foot in the Door. There are also drawings of Fuller, miscellaneous prints, and sound recordings and films featuring interviews with Fuller, company training and recruitment, and scenes of a trip to Connecticut by the Nova Scotia Apple Blossom Festival queen in 1960.
