Although the files relate to applications made prior to 1973 they may contain some more recent materials. The final volume of the series contains monthly reports summarizing the status of applications.

Part of Halifax Relief Commission

The Appraisal Board was established by the Halifax Relief Commission shortly following the commission's appointment in 1918. The primary function of the board was to assess damages to properties as a result of the 1917 explosion, ranging from minimal damage to total destruction of property. Claims received from the property owner, supported by an estimate from a contractor, were compared with the appraisal of an inspector of the board and an adjustment made. As the work of repairs proceeded, properties were inspected and payments were made on such reports up to the limit of the determined amount. The board also worked in close co-operation with the commission's reconstruction and architectural departments in the work of rebuilding. Board members included: Melvin S. Clarke, real estate businessman, chairman; F.S. Whittaker, insurance broker; J.C. Harris, contractor; W.G. foley, masonry contractor; and George Mackenzie, manufacturer.

Part of Halifax Relief Commission

Series forms part of the Halifax Relief Commission fonds and consists of architectural plans, maps and photographs commissioned or accumulated by the commission to support or document its role in the reconstruction of Halifax. Many of the architectural drawings are by Ross and MacDonald, architects, Montreal and Halifax. Photographs, almost exclusively prints, depict Halifax after the explosion and the reconstruction of the devastated areas, particularly Richmond. Also includes twelve scrapbooks, containing newspaper clippings, as well as typewritten notices, published articles and photographs, documenting the activities of the commission,1917-1971.

Series forms part of Nova Scotia Talent Trust fonds and consists of files related to funding applications to the Nova Scotia Talent Trust and associated materials. In submitting funding requests for educational programs or developmental opportunities artists created portfolios related to their artistic achievement that contained materials such as exhibition programs, concert programs, reviews, photographs or sound recordings of their work and other records to demonstrate their cultural achievement, as well as budget documents indicating the costs of programs and sources of other funding in addition to what was being sought from the Trust. Some files contain artistic or academic evaluations of the applicants. The files do indicate the level of support given by the Trust to individual applicants.

Forms part of Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and consists of records created during official Boards of Inquiry, the final in the processing of a human rights complaint. The Commission may, at any stage after the filing of a complaint by a member of the public, call for a Board of Inquiry to investigate and settle said complaint. Once appointed by the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court, Boards act independently from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission as public hearings, as defined under the Public Inquiries Act, and decisions are legally binding.

Consists of records created during the Inquiry process, through all stages of investigation, hearing, settlement and occasionally appeal. These include correspondence, reports, legal documentation, appeal and settlement information, transcripts and other documents relating to the legal process.
