Most pages are titled similarly to 'writs issued out of the Supreme Court' and record the action sought, the parties involved and their representation, the amount of damages sought and the date the writ was issued, indicating the commencement of a suit. Following the 1884 Judicature Act the format of the ledgers was changed from one line per case to several lines for each case, allowing the books to be used to record all documents received and issued in a case. In addition, cases from 1884 onward are identified with a case number. An index included in the volumes from 1884 onward allows access to the cause book as well as to the case file if one knows the name of the plaintiff.

Subseries forms part of Circuit records at Pictou series and consists of books recording the court's docket (list of causes). While most volumes served to set out the court's agenda of cases for a term, a number of early volumes appear to have been made as a record of disposal of items on the docket rather than as the docket itself. In general, the books record the plaintiffs and defendants; their solicitors; the relief sought; and how the actions was disposed of by the court (often including the amount of any judgment rendered). Some dockets are divided into separate declaration, summary and crown cause dockets for each term of the court.

Part of Supreme Court of Nova Scotia fonds

Subseries forms part of Circuit records at Pictou series and consists of judgment books recording findings of the Supreme Court in civil suits for Pictou County. Each entry records the parties involved and their lawyers, the action or damages sought, the finding of the court and its date and information on damages and costs awarded. Starting in November 1884, case numbers assigned under the Judicature Act are also recorded. Each book has an index by name of plaintiff that also records the defendants. Some entries also record the ultimate execution or satisfaction of the court's award. The entries within the books are chronological by date of judgment. Most actions are for the recovery of debts and seldom do the judgment books record any details about the cases.

These judgment books serve as a partial index and listing of the case file series for Pictou County; however, not every case was included.

The files mainly concern civil lawsuits for the collection of debts and usually only contain information proving the debt. Few criminal case files exist.

From 1884 onwards the cause books serve as an index by plaintiff to case numbers. Prior to 1884 civil cases may be identified in the docket books and cause books. No indexes to criminal cases appear to exist. Files are arranged chronologically. Starting in the 1880s case numbers and docket numbers indicate this order. Prior to this time the cases are arranged within each year alphabetically by plaintiff.
