Correspondence often includes maps, plans, reports, telegrams, and other material. Correspondence discussed the particulars of the incident and the subsequent measures taken. Reports were usually produced by the mining company involved or by the department's mine inspectors.

Mineral survey records

Series forms part of Department of Public Works and Mines fonds and consists of two volumes that recorded the particulars of departmental survey operations. Volumes provide a description of the work completed, the date, and the name of the surveyor. Some entries include related maps and plans of the area surveyed. Series also includes a variety of records relating to the surveying of gold and iron properties, the bulk of which were created by the deputy surveyor, S.H. Holmes. These records include maps, correspondence, and survey reports.

Until the passage, in 1917, of the Public Highways Act, the road commissioner and the assistant road commissioner were required to report to the Commissioner of Public Works and Mines on their examination of public highways, roads, bridges, and other public works in the province. Series includes tenders, notices for tenders, contracts, specifications, plans, blueprints, photographs, expenditure accounts, reports of bridge inspections, estimates, correspondence, and receipts. Series also includes tender applications submitted under the Bridges Act of 1883, which provided for provincial loans in order to build and reconstruct bridges in Nova Scotia using more "permanent materials."
