Stainer family
1996-279 · Collection · 1849-1996

Collection consists of genealogical records relating to the family of noted English composer and organist, Sir John Stainer (1840-1901), compiled by J.F.R. Stainer. The contents of the collection include notes compiled by Stainer, along with correspondence, photographs, and related genealogical documents including references to family connections with Flora MacDonald of Scotland and Jane Austen. The records were donated to complement Stayner family records documenting the connection with Roger Stayner who emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in the 1630s. Roger Stayner was a nephew of Admiral Sir Richard Stayner, of Tarrant Gunville, Dorset, England. This Stayner had descendants who came to Nova Scotia so the Stainer family collection complements that genealogical information.

Christie Macdonald
1990-03 · Collection · 1989

The cassette in this fonds contains dubs of five songs from two of Christie Macdonald's most successful shows, recorded when she was at the very height of her fame. "Two Little Love Bees" and "Day Dreams, Visions of Bliss" are both from "Spring Maid", and were recorded in 1911. "Sweethearts", "Crickets on the Hearth", and "The Angelus" are from "Sweethearts", and were recorded in 1913. All of these recordings were on the Victor label. The dubs were made from discs which were old and badly scratched. However, they do capture the beauty of Christie Macdonald's voice, and help the listener appreciate the talent of this exceptionally famous and successful Nova Scotian.

RG 41 · Collection · 1755-1973

This collection is an artificial arrangement, organized by county or jurisdiction rather than by provenance, with Halifax County first and the other counties following in alphabetical order. Within each county the records are generally arranged chronologically, retaining the original order in which they were filed together in the court houses. The inquest records in this collection were separated from other court record series by Archive staff, but many inquest papers remain intermingled with other court records. County Court records in particular should be consulted if a particular inquest in not located in this collection.

There are several series: general coroners’ returns for various counties, 1755-1928 that contain statistical returns and other administrative information; case files for coroners’ inquests and magisterial inquiries for the following counties: Halifax (1828 to 1928); Cape Breton (1906 to 1907), Colchester (1885 to 1973), Cumberland (1931 to 1959), Inverness (1936 to 1971), Lunenburg (1824 to 1907), Queens (1818 to 1940), and Shelburne (1786 to 1904); and medical reports on causes of death for Halifax City and the Town of Dartmouth (1895 to 1967).
