Archival description
Fonds · 1975-1997

This fonds documents the experiences of immigrants from Lebanon who settled in Nova Scotia during the latter half of the 20th century and consists of handwritten transcriptions and typed summaries of interviews with members of the Nova Scotia Lebanese community (1978-1980); newspaper clippings about Lebanese community members in Nova Scotia (NS) and Prince Edward Island (PE) (1975-1997); interview questionnaires (1979-1980); research progress report, background notes, maps (ca1976-1980); a few business letters (1977-1985); and a photocopied set of minutes of the Canada Lebanon Society Halifax Branch (1938-1978). The transcriptions are divided into two parts: Nancy Jabbra’s notes and Joseph Jabbra’s notes, while the typed summaries contain both Nancy and Joseph’s notes, roughly interfiled by date.

Fonds also includes photographs of a few Nova Scotia Lebanese businesses, churches, clubs, people, and a festival in Sydney NS (between 1977 and 1979). These were taken by Joseph or Nancy Jabbra as part of their study.

These social anthropology research files were created and used by Nancy and Joseph Jabbra for their books Voyageurs to a Rocky Shore: the Lebanese and Syrians of Nova Scotia (Halifax N.S.: Institute of Public Affairs, Dalhousie University, 1984) and Peoples of the Maritimes: Lebanese (Tantallon, N.S.: Four East Publications, 1987).
