Consists of records documenting the personal and business activities of the McQueen and Lowden families of Pictou County. Includes correspondence, diaries, ledgers, teachers' licences, agreements, mortgages, day-book, and technical drawing of a schoolhouse, created and accumulated by the McQueen family, 1850-1935. Also includes minute book for Chrystal Tide Division No. 372, Sons of Temperance, 1874-1876, and minute book and treasurer's book for Mayflower Juvenile Lodge, 1868-1870, which reflect the family's community involvement. Also contains Robert S. Lowden's ledger as a merchant at Merigomish, 1853-1855, and correspondence, poems, agreements, deeds, diary, and financial records pertaining to the Lowden family, 1832-1885. The correspondence includes letters between Robert S. Lowden and his wife Eliza (Olding); from Nicholas Purdue Olding Patterson to Eliza Olding; and from Charles Thomas Lowden and family of New York. Business correspondents include John Silver of Halifax, among others.
