Custodial history

In the 1960s, Rear Admiral H.F. Pullen was part of an effort to locate the missing Victoria Cross and campaign medals awarded to William Hall, VC the first black person to receive a Victoria Cross, 28 October 1859, and the only Canadian with a blue ribbon denoting his service to the British Navy. Pullen had hopes that the medals could be displayed in the Atlantic Provinces Pavilion of the Canadian World’s Exhibition (Expo ’67). They were eventually located on display in the Royal Naval Barracks in Portsmouth, England.

Scope and content

Consists primarily of correspondence relating to the search for William Hall’s military medals. Admiral Pullen and others wrote to organizations and institutions within Canada and abroad in their attempts, compiling documentation on the search as well as on William Hall himself. Also includes some material on the William Hall, VC memorial in Hantsport, Nova Scotia.
