Biographical history
Evelyn May Richardson was the daughter of Hattie (Larkin) and Arthur Douglas Fox. She graduated from Halifax Academy, attended Dalhousie University, and taught in various schools in Nova Scotia. In 1926 she married Morrill Richardson and moved to Massachusetts. In 1929 the Richardsons bought and moved to Bon Portage Island as lighthouse keepers. They had three children and resided on the island for thirty-five years, retiring to Doane's Point near Barrington, N.S. Evelyn Richardson wrote and published works both of fiction and non-fiction, winning a number of awards and commendations including the Governor General Award in 1945 for We Keep a Light. She held offices in the Shelburne Historical Society and the Cape Sable Historical Society.

Scope and content
Consists of records created and accumulated by Richardson relating to her literary career and personal activities, including correspondence with family, publishers and readers of her books; drafts of her books and short stories; notebooks; research notes on natural history; biographical material; newspaper clippings; speeches; scripts of interviews; guest books; diaries, ephemera, and photographs. Some of the material relates to her interest in bird watching and includes field books, bird study reports, draft article for Mainland Bird Watching Society Newsletter; and correspondence to the editor of the Shelburne Coastguard concerning the disregard of laws involving game and protected birds. Also includes some letters and sympathy cards written to Richardson's daughter Elizabeth Smith after Richardson's death.
