Biographical history
Ella Marguerite Letson, the daughter of Edgar and Lucretia (McLeod) Letson, was born 30 March 1887 at Port Medway, N.S. She was a schoolteacher, genealogist, and local historian. She retired in 1960 and lived in Port Medway until her death on 14 February 1985. Her history of Port Medway was published in 1985 under the title Port: A Short History of Port Medway, N.S.
Custodial history
E. Marguerite Letson donated portions of her material to the Public Archives of Nova Scotia in the 1950s. The Joseph Howe letters were given to Letson by her aunt Jerusha (Letson) Morine who received them from Mary (Austen) Letson, half sister of Joseph Howe. The microfilm reel containing Port Medway documents was borrowed from Letson for microfilming in 1963. Subsequent accruals to the fonds were received from her nephew J.E. Letson in 1986 and Mrs. J.E. Letson in 1988.
Scope and content
Consists of correspondence with E. Marguerite Letson's parents and her nephew J. E. Letson, research notes pertaining to the families and history of Port Medway, and a microfilm reel containing accounts, agreements, bills of sale, bonds, and other documents pertaining to churches, cemeteries, and land in Port Medway. Includes biographical notes, reminiscences, and certificates concerning her grandfather Joseph Jones Letson and two letters that he received from Joseph Howe.
