Series forms part of Nova Scotia County Courts fonds and consists of the cause books which record papers issued or filed in each case before the court. Generally the filing of a statement of claim would start the process in which the clerk of the court would assign a number to the case and issue a writ calling upon other parties to respond. The clerk would then record in the cause book the filing of any documents in connection with the case including those generated by the court which may indicate the final disposition of the case. Most cases involved the collection of debt and proceeded no further than the initial writ to other parties. Information recorded includes the names of the parties involved, the name of the plaintiff's solicitor, the case number assigned, any documents filed with the court and the date of filing. The first two volumes in the series are labelled as praecipe books and also record the sum of money sought. These praecipe books generally do not contain information relating to the case subsequent to the initial filing of a claim.
