    Biographical history

    John Campbell, originally from Argyllshire, Scotland, arrived in Pictou, N.S., in 1821 and relocated to Cape Breton before 1838. He served as lighthouse superintendent of St. Paul Island ca. 1843 and was appointed superintendent of the "humane establishment" for shipwrecks on the island in 1846. In 1874, John's son, Samuel Cunard Campbell, was appointed superintendent of St. Paul Island and was succeeded by his own son, John Malcolm Campbell, ca.1893.

    Custodial history

    The journals of John and Samuel Cunard Campbell were retained in the custody of John Malcolm Campbell.

    Scope and content

    Consists of records documenting the activities of John Campbell, Samuel Cunard Campbell, and John Malcolm Campbell as lighthouse keepers on St. Paul Island and Sable Island. Includes superintendent's journals for the lighthouse and "humane establishment" on St. Paul Island, 1843-1859, 1874-1893, 1902-1920, and Sable Island, 1921. Also includes an inventory of property on St. Paul Island, 1905 (revised in 1916 after a fire which demolished the south lighthouse).
